May 14-15 - New York

Saturday, May 14th we left Montreal. Wayne had picked up another rental car, to drive across the border to New York, late Friday night. We got an early start… picking up Pam’s parents George and Eileen by 7 a.m. The drive was very picturesque. The rolling hills of the Appellation Mountains, and the various greens , of the new leaves on all the deciduous trees. I can imagine the beauty when the colors vary even more in the fall!

We arrived in New York at 3p.m., in time for a short rest before we set sail for the first function, a cruise around the island of Manhattan, we would be attending for Andrea’s graduation from Columbia University!

The sailing trip was wonderful! What a sight the city is from the Hudson River! The Statute of Liberty was impressive. The food was terrific, as was the wine! We had a cheese bar for appetizers, green salad, wonderful mac and cheese, potatoes and roasted veggies, and roast beef! The company was unparalleled! I enjoyed meeting Andrea’s friends, old and new, that were there.

When we left, Wayne still needed to return our car! It was almost midnight, raining and he did not have a navigator, since I bogged out! It was a trip from hell, and he still came back with the car!!!! What a story! However, Sunday, we were successful at returning the car. The rental people were quite familiar with the problems Wayne had the night before!

We then went to Time Square and then to Carnegie for pastrami sandwiches, the size of a house! We also had cole slaw, fries that came with two kinds of pickles—the regular dill and one more cucumber tasting, besides the sandwich.

After stuffing ourselves we went for a relaxing walk thru part of Central Park. It is huge and well set out. There were all different types of areas -- peaceful, entertainment, bikes paths, of course walkers, horse drawn carriages, and bike carriages, sport fields, lakes...

After a rest, we again took the subway to the financial district, saw ground zero, went thru Century 21, a discount shopping market, and then went up to the Village. My favorite area was definitely the Village. I liked the restaurants, the shops, and the whole attitude
