We left Cinque Terre very early (8:00). The weather had turned nasty, cold, windy, and rainy. We took four different trains, the last one being a EuroStar high-speed train, but we finally arrived at Venice at about 3:30. The weather was a bit overcast but warmer then Cinque Terre.
We left the train station and boarded a vaporetto (water bus) to take us to our hotel. We cruised the entire length of the Grand Canal, on the slow boat. Our stop was just two after the Piazza San Marco. After checking in we toured the square and a walk along the canal. What a beautiful city! It is amazing how different each city feels. It’s not like they feel like “a bit city” each has it’s own personality!
Our room is wonderful--very large bedroom, dinning/kitchen, and modern bathroom. A view outside our windows of a canal with gondolas, 2-minute walk to Piazza San Marco or the Grand Canal.
Today, our first full day in the city it is rainy and things are flooding. San Marco Square is under a foot of water but there are platforms that are put on the major flooded walkways to keep pedestrians above water level! We wandered the city to find the marketplace by the Rialto Bridge. Had our obligatory cappuccino, latte and pastry, and headed back to the room. We were a little wet and cold, but we found a grocery store for cheese to go with the bread we found at a pani, a little wine and we were set.
Back to the square to get some flooding pictures…it was all ready a lot drier than before.
The tide had gone out and allowed for drainage through the little drainage bricks all over the walkways. We wandered, got lost, found our way, got lost repeat…
Wayne found an Internet spot so we dashed this off to send it out today.
Hope all is well with you all …We are looking forward to some of the American amenities. Till later Love you all
