Lieden

Wednesday May 6 - After leaving Delft, the rains stopped and we dried out while on the train heading back north. We decided to stop in Leiden as we had planned. When we got off the train, the sun was shining. We started the city walk, but stopped for lunch in a nice Italian pizzeria. Food was great. We looked out on the canal and the sun shining brightly. We stepped outside just as the black clouds began to close in. I wanted to at least get to where Rembrandt had been born and where the Rhine flowed through Leiden. I wasn’t aware of either of those two facts prior to this day! Just as I was taking, what I hope to be an artsy photo of a windmill, Wayne said we’ve got to get back! The rain is here! We started to scurry back but only got half way when the wind, heavy rain and hail visited us once again. We stood under shelter for a few minutes and decided to just run for it. For a second time that day we got on the train station soaked. Leiden is a beautiful city. We wished we could have seen more, but the train felt much better on this day.

We were able to communicate somewhat with Candy and Eric. They also were in Delft but went to Den Haag for lunch rather than Leiden. We later met them for dinner in Amsterdam at a lovely Italian restaurant behind the flower garden. The food was great and the company even better. We were able to share our experiences of the last two days. We were at some of the same places but we missed each other. They also missed most of the rain. They had already left Kuekenhof before the rain deluge started. And earlier, they left Delft and were in a museum when the second rain storm came through. This was our last time to see Candyce and Eric, we had friends who were in town the next day and Candyce and Eric had a big farewell dinner that night.
